Beads of Hope offers words and tokens of courage to children undergoing treatment for cancer while at the same time bringing awareness to those participating of the importance and impact their gesture of support brings. The Patrick Wiese Foundation provided funding for the CBA and Homer Varsity Baseball teams to participate in the Golisano Children’s Hospital Carry A Bead program. Pat and Jack Sheridan discussed the importance that it has for children undergoing treatment.
Each athlete received a matched bead set that they wore during warmups. We believe that good intentions and caring thoughts go into the bead during the intentional act of caring. One bead as well as a signed note of encouragement was returned and given to a child undergoing cancer treatment during their “normal” day. The CBA and Homer baseball players kept the matched bead as a reminder of their commitment to be a direct source of encouragement to a child in Beads of Courage.
The student-athletes response to the program was amazing as can be seen from some of the attached photos of them writing their notes of encouragement. Also included are two of the notes that a cancer patient will be receiving.
