Dr. Mike Wiese speaks of what he calls “cancer angels.” He’s encountered them many times since last summer, when he had as tough a meeting as he ever faced with any patient. Wiese is an orthopedic surgeon. He and his wife Kathleen, who live in Fayetteville, are the parents of four children. Pat, 21, is their youngest son. Baseball is the great passion of his life. He was one of the best high school players in the region when he attended Christian Brothers Academy, and he went on to become an outfielder — and captain — for the Le Moyne College team. It’s the end of Pat Wiese’s junior year, he’s leading the Le Moyne baseball team into the Northeast-10 Championships. An outfielder, he leads the team in hitting, runs, stolen bases and on-base percentage, but instead of feeling like his usual dominant self, his knee is in “throbbing pain”. Wiese, a CBA graduate, has played through hamstring and quad injuries throughout his career, but this is different. His right knee throbs during warm-ups, but when his teammates and coaches ask if he’s okay, he says he’s fine. Continue reading..

MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM COMES UP BIG IN SEASON OPENER

The Le Moyne men’s basketball team came up big in their home opener against Mansfield on Saturday night, a night that was dedicated to fellow Le Moyne athlete Pat Wiese. The team played in front of a packed house that was filled to capacity with students, faculty, and fans, many of whom were sporting “Pray for Pat” t-shirts in honor Wiese and his fight against bone cancer.. Before the game, Wiese received a $5,000 check raised by friends and family, with an additional $1,400 added on from donations and t-shirt sales..
